Best Flooring for Dogs and Pets

How vinyl, laminate, hardwood and tile stand up to claws, accidents and water bowls, and what we'd put down in a home with a dog.

Quick answer

For most homes with dogs or cats, the best floor is rigid-core vinyl plank with a wear layer of 20 mil or more. It’s waterproof, so accidents and tipped water bowls don’t hurt it, and it resists claw marks better than wood. Laminate rated AC4 is the budget pick if you wipe up quickly. If you want real wood, choose a hard species in a light, matte finish, which hides scratches. Porcelain tile is the toughest of all, but it’s hard and cold underfoot.

Claws, accidents, water bowls and wet paws at the back door: a floor in a home with pets gets tested every day. No floor is scratch-proof, but some hide wear far better than others. Here’s how each one holds up, and what we’d put down in a Toronto home with a dog.

Pet floors side by side

Floor Claws Accidents and water Installation from
Rigid-core vinyl plank Good; choose a 20 mil or thicker wear layer Waterproof planks; wipe up rather than leave it on a seam $3.20 per sq ft
Laminate Good at AC4 or higher Wipe up fast: the core swells if liquid gets into a joint $3.20 per sq ft
Engineered hardwood Marks show; light, matte floors hide them Wipe up fast: urine can stain wood $3.20 floating, $4.90 glued or nailed
Solid hardwood As engineered, and it can be sanded more times Wipe up fast: urine can stain wood $4.50 per sq ft
Porcelain or ceramic tile The toughest; PEI 4 suits a home with dogs Waterproof $13.50 per sq ft, labour only

Taking up your old floor is included in every price above, and the floor itself is priced on top.

Vinyl plank: the safest bet

Rigid-core vinyl doesn’t absorb liquid, so an accident or a tipped water bowl wipes up without marking the floor. Wipe it up rather than letting it sit, though. The planks are waterproof, but the joints between them are where liquid can get underneath.

Claws are about the wear layer, the clear top coat measured in mils. 12 mil suits a family home. For a big dog, go 20 mil or more. The vinyl we carry runs from 12 to 30 mil, and because vinyl can’t be sanded, the wear layer you buy is the one you keep. Rigid-core planks also resist dents better than the softer vinyl lines, which matters with a heavy dog.

A matte, textured surface gives paws more grip than a glossy one and hides fine scratches too. The types are explained in types of vinyl flooring, and what goes wrong when vinyl is laid badly is in vinyl plank flooring problems.

Laminate: fine if you wipe up fast

Laminate has a hard, printed top layer, and its AC rating tells you how much wear it takes. AC3 covers a normal house. AC4 is the sensible upgrade for a home with dogs.

The weak spot is the core. It’s fibreboard, and fibreboard swells when liquid reaches it. Wiped up quickly, an accident does no harm. Left in a joint overnight, it can lift the edges, and swollen edges don’t go back down. For a puppy still being house-trained or an older dog that has accidents, vinyl is the safer choice at the same installation price. See types of laminate flooring and laminate vs vinyl plank.

Hardwood with a dog: species and colour

Claws will mark any wood floor. Untrimmed nails leave fine scratches, and a dog stopping fast in a hallway leaves clusters of them. The question is how much it shows.

  • Species. Hickory is the hardest common flooring species. Maple and white oak are a little harder than red oak.
  • Colour. Light, natural floors hide scratches and pet hair. Dark floors show every one.
  • Sheen and texture. Matte and wire-brushed boards hide marks that a glossy finish shows off.
  • Finish. An oiled floor can be touched up where it’s scratched, where a lacquered one is sanded across the whole room.

Scratches sit in the top of the wood, and sanding takes them out. A dark urine stain that has soaked into a board often doesn’t sand out, and that board is replaced instead. How many times an engineered floor can be sanded depends on its wear layer, which is covered in engineered vs solid hardwood. For day-to-day care, see how to protect your hardwood floors.

Tile: the toughest, and the hardest

Porcelain and ceramic tile don’t scratch under claws and don’t care about water. Tile is rated by PEI, and PEI 4 is the better choice for an entry, a hallway or a home with dogs. It’s the floor for a mudroom or the landing at the back door, where the dog comes in wet.

The trade-off is comfort. Tile is hard and cold underfoot, and slippery when it’s wet, so pick a tile with grip and put a rug where the dog sleeps. Installation is $13.50 per square foot, labour only, with thinset, grout and levelling clips on the same quote. See types of ceramic flooring.

Stairs and pets

Stairs get the most claw traffic in the house, and you see the treads from above every time you come down. Dark treads show dust, pet hair and scratches more than light ones, so with a dog, a lighter stain wins. See stair stain colours.

Vinyl treads are an option too: they cope well with pets and the odd spill and wipe clean. See vinyl plank stairs. A full hardwood staircase remodel, with the carpet taken off, new treads and risers, posts, spindles, handrail and stain to match the floor, is about $7,000 a flight.

Frequently asked questions

Do dogs ruin vinyl plank flooring?

Not usually. Claws can leave fine marks on any floor, but rigid-core vinyl with a 20 mil or thicker wear layer stands up well, resists dents better than softer vinyl, and accidents wipe off without staining.

Is laminate or vinyl better for dogs?

Vinyl, for most homes, because the planks are waterproof. AC4 laminate resists scratches well, but its fibreboard core swells if urine or water sits in a joint.

Will dog pee ruin laminate flooring?

It can if it sits. Wiped up quickly, it does no harm. Left in a joint, it soaks into the fibreboard core and lifts the edges, and that damage doesn’t reverse.

What is the best hardwood flooring for dogs?

A hard species in a light colour with a matte or wire-brushed finish. Hickory is the hardest common species, and maple and white oak are a little harder than red oak. On concrete, it has to be engineered.

What is the best flooring for dogs that have accidents?

Rigid-core vinyl plank or porcelain tile. Both are waterproof, so accidents wipe up without marking the floor. Vinyl is warmer and softer underfoot, and tile is the tougher of the two.

Is tile flooring good for dogs?

It’s the toughest floor there is against claws and water. It’s also hard, cold and slippery when wet, so choose a tile with grip and put a rug where the dog sleeps.
