What we change
Treads and risers. The steps themselves. We cap the existing structure with new hardwood treads and risers, so carpeted or builder-grade stairs become solid wood without tearing out the staircase underneath. Newel posts. The thick posts at the bottom, top and turns of the railing. Swapping dated posts for square, tapered or box-style newels changes the character of a staircase more than any other single part.
Spindles. Also called balusters, the uprights between handrail and step. We replace wood spindles with new wood, wrought iron or glass panels, and we can do this on its own without touching the steps.
Handrails. New rail profiles, wall-mounted rails, and continuous rails around landings, finished to match the treads or stained as a contrast.
Nosings, stringers and landings. The pieces that make a staircase read as one finished object rather than a set of parts.
What it costs
Remodelling a full flight is usually about $7,000, and that figure covers taking the carpet off, new treads and risers, newel posts, spindles, the handrail, and staining to match your floor. The number of steps, landings, the shape of the stair (straight, L-shaped or curved) and the finish you choose move it up or down, and we confirm the price in writing in your free quote. A curved staircase takes the most work and runs closer to $10,000 a flight. Townhouses usually come in higher too, because they tend to have more steps, spindles, posts and handrail to cover.
Smaller jobs are quoted on their own: swapping spindles for iron or glass while keeping the steps, replacing a handrail, or refinishing treads that are structurally fine but tired. Send us photos and the number of flights and we will tell you what the job involves before anyone comes out.
Every quote is a fixed price for the work described. There is no hourly billing and nothing added on the day.

Bolton: carpet stairs to white oak, three days on site.
The stairs were carpeted when we arrived. Three days later they were white oak.
It is a straight run off the hall that curves at the top into the landing, and the curve is the part that takes the time. The handrail carries round it in one continuous piece instead of stopping and restarting at the turn. You notice it most running your hand up: nothing interrupts it.
New treads and risers cap the original structure, so nothing was torn out. Risers painted white, treads left light and wire-brushed, black wrought iron spindles with a twisted collar, and box newel posts in the same oak, square with a recessed panel.
The floors were done in the same visit, which is why the upstairs hallway is the same white oak as the treads. Same species, same stain, same sheen, ordered together. Stairs bought separately from the floor rarely match, and the top step is where it shows. Should stair treads match your floor?

How long does a staircase renovation take?
About three to four days for one flight, and the same for a flight with a landing. You can still use the stairs overnight and whenever you’re home while the work is under way. A curved flight takes about a week. Refinishing takes longer, usually five days or more a flight, because each coat has to dry.
Can you change just the spindles and keep my steps?
Yes. Swapping wood spindles for wrought iron or glass panels, or replacing a handrail, can be done on its own without touching the treads. It is the quickest way to modernise a staircase that is structurally sound.
What is the difference between remodelling and replacing a staircase?
Remodelling covers the existing steps with new hardwood treads and risers, keeping the structure underneath. Replacing means removing the staircase itself, which is a much larger job and rarely necessary in a house whose stairs are solid.
