Staircase Repair & Refinishing Toronto
A staircase that squeaks, moves underfoot or has lost its finish doesn’t always need replacing. 22FLOORING repairs loose and squeaking stairs, refinishes existing hardwood staircases to match your floors, and replaces spindles and handrails, across Toronto and the GTA.
Our
Approach
We start by finding out what your stairs are made of. Solid hardwood treads that are thick enough to sand can be refinished, which is stair restoration in the real sense: the same wood, back to a clean, even finish. Pine, particle board, painted or damaged treads are better recapped with new hardwood, and we tell you which your stairs need at the free visit.
A refinish is sanded, stained and coated on site. We stain a sample on your tread wood and check it against the floor before the whole flight is done. Each coat has to dry, so the stairs are off limits for a while each day, but you can use them every night. Spindles, posts and the handrail can be replaced in the same job, as on our staircase refinishing job in Bolton, or on their own.
We cover Toronto, Vaughan and Woodbridge, Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Richmond Hill and the rest of the GTA. Send us photos of your staircase and the number of flights, and we will tell you what the job involves.
We are licensed, insured to $2 million and WSIB compliant. Our workmanship is warranted for up to two years, and most of the floors we carry come with a manufacturer warranty of 20 to 40 years residential, 10 to 20 commercial.
What repair and refinishing costs
Refinishing a flight of existing hardwood stairs runs about $6,000 to $7,000 and takes five days or more, because each coat has to dry. It makes sense when the stairs underneath are solid hardwood worth keeping. If they are carpeted or worn through, recapping costs about the same and gives you new wood.
Repairs to loose, squeaking or damaged treads, a new handrail, or swapping spindles for iron or glass are quoted on their own, once we have seen the stairs, because two squeaks can have very different causes. The in-home visit costs nothing, and we give you the number in writing before any work starts.
Recapping with new hardwood runs around $7,000 a flight. See staircase renovation in Toronto for everything a recap includes, and how a carpet-to-hardwood stairs job goes, step by step.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to repair or refinish stairs?
Refinishing a flight of existing hardwood stairs runs about $6,000 to $7,000. Repairs to loose, squeaking or damaged treads are quoted once we have seen them, because two squeaks can have very different causes. Every price is fixed in writing after a free in-home measure, with no hourly billing and nothing added on the day.
Can you fix squeaking or loose stairs?
Yes. A squeak or a tread that moves is quoted once we have seen what is causing it, because two squeaks can have very different causes. Send us a photo or a short video and the number of flights to start, and the visit to look at it is free.
How long does refinishing stairs take?
Five days or more for a flight, because each coat has to dry before the next. The stairs are off limits while a coat dries, but you can use them every night. A recap with new treads and risers is quicker, three to four days a flight.
Should I refinish my stairs or recap them?
Refinishing runs about $6,000 to $7,000 a flight and recapping about $7,000, so it is not really a price decision. It comes down to what the stairs are made of. Solid hardwood with life left in it: refinish. Pine, particle board, painted or damaged: recap. Our stair recapping vs refinishing guide walks through how to tell.
Do you replace spindles and handrails too?
Yes. Newel posts in square, tapered or box profiles, spindles in wood, wrought iron or glass, and new handrails including wall-mounted rails and continuous rails that carry around a landing. Spindle-only and handrail-only jobs are quoted separately.
Can carpeted stairs be turned into hardwood?
Yes. New hardwood treads and risers cap the existing structure, so the staircase becomes solid wood without tearing anything out. Pull the carpet back at the top step first: if there is solid hardwood underneath in good shape, refinishing may suit you better, and we will tell you which one your stairs need.
Do you install carpet on stairs?
We supply carpet but we do not install it. If your plan is new carpet on the stairs, we are the wrong crew for that part of the job and we will say so up front.
You get one point of contact from your first quote to the day we clean up and hand the room back to you.
Tell us how your household actually lives and we will match the floor to it, rather than the other way round.
It is invisible work, and it is the difference between a floor that lasts two years and one that lasts twenty.
Most of our work now comes from referrals and repeat clients, which is the only review that really counts.
