Toucan Flooring Review (2026)
An installer’s look at Toucan flooring: 236 products across 12.3 mm laminate and SPC vinyl, wear layers up to 20 mil, and what they cost installed in Toronto.

Quick answer
Where the numbers come from
Every figure below comes from the spec sheets of the 236 Toucan products on our site as of September 2026. Where a sheet does not state something, we say so rather than fill the gap. We have not run our own wear tests and we do not give star ratings. Individual collections vary and every product page shows its own numbers.
The range side by side
12.3 mm laminate is thicker than most
Budget laminate is typically 7 or 8 mm. Toucan’s laminate is 12.3 mm, and the difference is immediately obvious underfoot: a thicker board flexes less, sounds less hollow and bridges small dips in a subfloor instead of sinking into them.
That last point matters in older Toronto houses, where the subfloor has usually moved. It does not remove the need to level a bad floor, but it is more forgiving of a floor that is merely imperfect. Height at doorways is the trade-off – 12.3 mm plus underlay adds up.
The collection names tell you what you are buying
Unusually, Toucan’s naming is honest: if it says SPC, it is stone-polymer vinyl. If it carries a TF number, it is laminate. That is more than most brands manage, and it means you are less likely to be sold one while thinking you bought the other.
The practical difference is water. SPC handles it; laminate does not, whatever the surface treatment claims. Kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and basements want the SPC lines. See the wider vinyl range range.
What to check before you buy
20 mil or 12 mil. Both are in this range. 12 mil belongs in a bedroom, not a hallway.
Floor height. 12.3 mm laminate plus underlay is a tall build-up. Check it against your doors and appliances before ordering.
Width against the room. 196 mm is a wide plank and shows an out-of-square wall, which older houses usually have.
What it costs installed
Floating laminate and click vinyl are from $3.20 per square foot, glue-down vinyl from $5.50 including glue, and engineered hardwood nailed or glued from $4.90 including glue and nails. Engineered that only clicks and floats is from $3.20. Taking up your old floor is included, the floor itself is priced on top, and the full list is on our flooring installation cost page. For how we install it, see our pages on vinyl flooring installation in Toronto and laminate flooring installation in Toronto.

Frequently asked questions
Is Toucan laminate or vinyl?
Both. The SPC collections are stone-polymer vinyl and the TF-numbered collections are laminate. The naming is refreshingly clear compared with most brands, so you can tell which you are looking at from the collection name alone.
How thick is Toucan laminate?
12.3 mm, which is half an inch and noticeably thicker than the 7 to 8 mm laminate sold at the budget end. It feels more solid underfoot and bridges minor subfloor dips better, but it raises your floor height more – check your doorways.
Is Toucan SPC waterproof?
The SPC lines have a waterproof stone-polymer core and are the ones we would fit in a kitchen, bathroom, laundry or basement. The laminate collections are not waterproof floors, whatever surface treatment they carry.
What wear layer does Toucan use?
20 mil on 104 of the sheets we hold and 12 mil on 20. Twenty mil is what we would specify for a hallway, an entry or a rental. Twelve mil is fine in a bedroom and thin anywhere busy.
Does Toucan need underlay?
The laminate does, and in a condo it has to meet whatever sound rating your building requires – get that in writing from your property manager before ordering. Some SPC lines have a pad attached; the product page says which.
