Tiles in Toronto & the GTA
Tile is one of the hardest-wearing floors you can put in a home. It shrugs off water, stains and scratches, which is why it is the classic choice for bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and entryways, and it works well over in-floor heating.
What we carry. Our tile collection has 52 styles from 1867 Floors, in stone, marble and slate looks. Nearly all of them are porcelain, with a few ceramic tiles.
Porcelain or ceramic? Porcelain is made from finer clay fired at higher temperatures, so it is denser and absorbs very little water. That makes it the better choice for wet areas and busy floors. Ceramic is a little softer and easier to cut, and it works well in rooms with lighter traffic.
Installation. Tile is set in mortar and then grouted, so the job has more steps than a floating floor. The subfloor must be solid, flat and free of flex, or tiles and grout lines can crack over time, which is why we check and prepare the subfloor first. Large-format tiles need an especially flat base. The floor also needs time for the mortar and grout to cure before heavy use.
Care. Glazed porcelain only needs regular sweeping and a damp mop. Sealing the grout helps it resist stains, especially in kitchens and entryways.
