Solid Hardwood in Toronto & the GTA
Solid hardwood is a single piece of real wood from top to bottom. It is the traditional choice for main and upper floors, and because the whole board is wood, it can be sanded and refinished many times over its life, so a well-kept solid floor can last for generations.
What we carry. Our catalogue has 101 solid hardwood floors, most of them from Appalachian Flooring, with a few from NAF Floors@Work and Grandeur. Red oak and white oak make up most of the range, alongside maple, birch, hickory and walnut. Almost all of our solid boards are 3/4" thick.
Where it works. Solid hardwood is nailed or stapled to a wooden subfloor, so it belongs on the main and upper floors of a house. It is not the right choice over concrete or in basements, where moisture and temperature swings make solid boards move. For those spaces, engineered hardwood gives you the same real-wood surface on a more stable core.
Seasons and humidity. Wood expands in humid summers and shrinks in dry winters, and solid boards move more than engineered ones. Small seasonal gaps are normal. Keeping indoor humidity steady, with a humidifier in winter, keeps the floor tight and helps prevent cupping.
Refinishing later. When a solid floor gets worn or you want a new colour, it can be sanded back to bare wood and refinished instead of replaced. We also offer hardwood refinishing for existing floors.
