Alta Moda

Alta Moda is the brushed, flat-sheen line in Appalachian Flooring's hardwood range, with 25 styles named after fabrics, including Linen, Suede, Cotton, Velour and Brocade. Brushing opens up the grain a little, and with no shine on top the floor shows fewer scuffs and less glare. That helps in busy family rooms and in homes with dogs.

Sixteen of the styles are white oak, available in Advantage, Excel, Live Sawn Character and Prestige grades, and nine are red oak in Excel or Prestige. Each one can be ordered as 3/4" solid hardwood in 3 1/4" or 4 1/4" widths, or as engineered planks 11.4 mm or 18.4 mm thick. Engineered white oak comes 4", 5" or 7" wide, while engineered red oak stops at 5". Solid boards belong on a wood subfloor on main and upper floors; for a basement or a concrete slab, the engineered version is the one to look at.
