Replacing Stair Spindles: Iron, Wood or Glass

You can replace stair spindles and keep your stairs: wrought iron, wood or glass, usually in a day, with the handrail left in place. What it involves and what moves the price.

Quick answer

Yes, you can replace the spindles and keep your stairs. Wood spindles can be swapped for wrought iron or glass without new treads or risers, and the handrail can stay where it is. A spindle-only job on one flight usually takes a day and is quoted on its own, as a fixed written price after a free measure.

Maybe your steps are fine and it’s the railing that dates the hallway: chunky turned wood painted white, a bit loose at the bottom. That’s a smaller job than it looks. Here’s what it involves, how to choose between iron, wood and glass, and where the price comes from. For everything else we do on stairs, see our staircase renovation page.

Can you replace spindles without redoing the stairs?

Yes. Spindles, the handrail and the newel posts are separate from the treads and risers underneath. We quote spindle-only and handrail-only jobs on their own, including swapping spindles for iron or glass while keeping the steps.

The handrail doesn’t have to come off either. It stays in place while the old spindles come out and the new ones go in under it.

What usually decides whether to stop at spindles is the rest of the railing. If the handrail is solid and you like it, new spindles under it can be enough. If it’s worn, loose or a style that won’t suit the new spindles, doing the handrail and newel posts at the same time saves a second visit.

Iron, wood or glass: how to choose

Wrought iron suits wood treads well. Thin black iron against oak gives the staircase a crisp outline without hiding the wood. There’s plenty of choice in the detail: plain bars, twists, baskets, or a single twisted collar, which is what went into the Bolton job below.

Wood suits a traditional house, or a staircase where you want the spindles painted to match the trim. New wood spindles can be stained to match the treads and the floor, so the whole flight reads as one piece of joinery.

Glass is for when you want the staircase to disappear rather than stand out. It lets light through from a window or the landing, and nothing interrupts the view of the treads. It shows fingerprints more than iron or wood, which matters in a house with small children.

A combination people search for a lot right now is white oak treads with black iron spindles and white risers. There’s a reason it keeps turning up: the black and white frame the wood instead of competing with it. If you’re also changing the floor, match the treads to it first and let the spindles be the contrast. We explain why in should stair treads match your floor?

A real one: black iron in Bolton

This staircase went from carpet to white oak with the floors done in the same visit, and the spindles were the finishing touch. We fitted black wrought iron spindles with a twisted collar, set between square oak box newels with a recessed panel. The run curves into the landing at the top, and the handrail follows the curve in one continuous piece instead of stopping and restarting at the turn.

The iron is what gives the white oak its outline. Without it, the staircase would read as a pale block. The full story and photos are on our staircase renovation page.

How far apart do spindles have to be?

Ontario’s Building Code limits the openings in a stair guard: a 100 mm (about 4-inch) sphere must not pass between the spindles. That’s why replacement spindles aren’t just “one for one” with the old ones. If the old spindles were spaced wider, the new layout has to close the gaps, and that’s one of the things we check at the measure.

What spindle replacement costs

A spindle-only job is quoted separately, and like every job it’s a fixed written price after a free measure, with no hourly billing and nothing added on the day.

Spindles only, keeping the steps and handrailQuoted separately after a free measure
Spindles, handrail and newel posts togetherQuoted together, done in the same visit
Full flight: treads, risers, spindles, posts, handrail and stainAbout $7,000
Curved staircase, full flightAbout $10,000

The count matters, and it’s easy to underestimate: the landing and any railing along the upstairs hall count too. Townhouses tend to come in higher for the same reason: more steps, more spindles, more posts and more handrail to cover.

If the treads are carpeted or worn, it’s often worth doing the whole flight at once. Our guide to converting carpet stairs to hardwood covers that job, and if the treads are solid hardwood worth keeping, recapping vs refinishing explains when a refinish is enough.

How long it takes

A spindle-only job on one flight usually takes a day. A full flight with new treads, risers, spindles, posts and handrail takes three to four days, and the stairs can be used overnight between working days.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace stair spindles without replacing the stairs?

Yes. Spindles can be swapped for wrought iron, wood or glass while the treads and risers stay. It’s quoted as a spindle-only job, fixed in writing after a free measure, and one flight usually takes a day.

Can wood spindles be replaced with wrought iron?

Yes. Black iron against oak or light treads gives the staircase a clean outline, and the treads can stay as they are.

Can stair spindles be replaced with glass?

Yes. Glass keeps the staircase open and lets light through, and like iron it can go in without new treads. It’s quoted with the rest of the railing work in your free quote.

Do I need a new handrail when I replace spindles?

No. The handrail can stay in place while the spindles are swapped under it. If it’s worn, loose or won’t suit iron or glass, replacing it in the same visit saves a second trip.

How much does it cost to replace stair spindles?

A spindle-only job is quoted separately, as a fixed written price after a free measure. The number of spindles and the material move it most. Replacing the whole flight, with treads, risers, spindles, posts, handrail and stain, is usually about $7,000.

How far apart can stair spindles be?

In Ontario, the openings in a stair guard must not let a 100 mm (about 4-inch) sphere pass through, so new spindles are spaced to close any gaps.
